Abstract

This research aims at finding out the implementation of Quantum teaching in the teaching of English at SDIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta and the strengths and weaknesses of teaching English using Quantum teaching.This research is descriptive qualitative research. The approach is naturalistic study. The key instrument is the researcher him self. The researcher collects the data by observing English class and conducting in-depth interviews with the teacher and students of SDIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta. The data includes field notes and interview transcript.From the data analysis, research finding and discussion, the researcher draws some conclusions, such as: First, the background of teaching English in SDIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta especially at the sixth years is to introduce English as the first foreign language and to prepare the students in attending the junior high school. Quantum teaching has four principles: Everything talks, Experience before named, Appreciate the efforts, and deserve to be learned, deserve to be celebrated. In this case, the roles of the teacher are as a creator of friendly classroom atmosphere, the elector of the most effective materials and classroom activities, a guide and facilitator, and partner of study. Meanwhile, the roles of students are as the player and partner of study. The role of the instructional materials is to support the students in understanding the lesson. It is combined with the complete learning facilities such as white boards, various colors of board maker, pictures, tape recorder, and CD players. Second, the implementation of Quantum teaching in teaching of English at SDIT Nur Hidayah Surakarta has strengths and weaknesses. The strengths are as follows: (1) Students are motivated to be active (2) Students have enough opportunities to produce the language; they can express their mind during the lesson without worrying of making mistake (3) Students are able to participate in every learning activities (4) Quantum teaching method is applicable for the teaching of English at Elementary level because it can provide such kind of activities that make the students naturally engage in. Meanwhile, the weaknesses are: The Teaching Learning activities using Quantum Teaching Method is sometimes not efficient, time consuming, needs good preparation, and it can cause noise and not serious classroom. From this research paper, it�s suggested that the teacher who is interested to apply the Quantum teaching should consider whether the methods are suitable with the material, human resources, and condition of the school environment or not.
